The original collection brings together surnames, house names and bari or bali names. These terms should not be treated as interchangeable, or as a test of who belongs to a community.
Names in a family record
A surname identifies a name used by a person or family. A house name can connect an account to an ancestral home. Bari or bali refers here to a lineage grouping described in local tradition. Spellings and usage differ between families and transliterations.
The older page combined name lists with claims about racial origin and biological inheritance. Those claims have been removed. The retained bari list is a record of what the former site published; it is not an exhaustive or independently authenticated genealogy.
Record the context
When contributing a family account, identify the locality, spelling and source of the information. Publish details about living relatives only with their permission. A family’s own documents and recollections are more useful than assumptions made from a surname alone.
