Kapu Bunts Sangha

Kapu Bunts Sangha is a local community association in Kapu, also spelt Kaup, in Udupi district. Its documented public activities connect women’s participation, education and Tulu cultural life. The Sri Lakshmi Janardhana temple auditorium appears as an event venue in reports separated by almost eighteen years, giving the association a recognisable place in the town’s community life.

Women’s gatherings

A convention organised by the sangha on 25 December 2007 brought Bunt women together at the temple auditorium. Daijiworld’s contemporary report records the recognition of Beena V. Shetty, Sheela J. Shetty, Keerti Shetty Kalattur and Vidya Shetty Uliyargoli. The women were the focus of the programme, with their achievements publicly acknowledged before the gathering. The report establishes activity by 2007; it does not give a founding year.

Aati and student awards

Vijayavani reported an Aati Nenehu gathering in August 2025 organised with the sangha’s women’s section and Bunt families from twelve villages. The programme included a talk on the Aati season and a Tulu riddle competition, placing spoken language and seasonal knowledge alongside the formal meeting.

Students from the participating villages who had scored above 90 per cent in SSLC or second PUC received scholarships under a memorial award. A separate gold medal recognised the leading SSLC student. These were the criteria reported for that programme, rather than a standing application rule for every year.

A recorded development decision

A January 2022 report on Karnataka Cabinet decisions recorded approval to lease 0.10 acre of land belonging to the Janardhana temple in Padu village to Kapu Bunts Sangha. That is a documented land decision, separate from the cultural events held in the temple auditorium. The available report does not establish that a new sangha building was subsequently completed or give a current booking office.
